|---|---|---|---|
| Opposition | despite, in spite of | although, even though, while, whereas | however, nevertheless, still |
| Cause | because of, due to, owing to | because, since, as | — |
| Conséquence | — | so, so that (= si bien que) | therefore, consequently, as a result, thus |
| But | for (+ nom) | so that, in order that | — |
| Addition | in addition to, besides | — | moreover, furthermore, in addition, also |
| Condition | — | if, unless, provided that, as long as | otherwise |
| Temps | during, after, before | while, when, once, as soon as | meanwhile, afterwards |
- Despite the delay, the project was completed on budget.despite + nom
- Although the train was late, we arrived on time.although + proposition
- The train was late. However, we arrived on time.however : adverbe, entre deux phrases
- Sales fell because of the strike / because there was a strike.because of + nom / because + proposition
- We left early so that we could avoid traffic.so that : but, souvent avec can / could
While sales rose in Europe, they fell in Asia.
- since : depuis (temps) ou puisque (cause). Since the office is closed, we will meet online.
- as : comme / puisque, mais aussi en tant que (as a manager).
- either… or (soit… soit), neither… nor (ni… ni), both… and (à la fois), not only… but also (non seulement… mais aussi).
Piège : « despite of » n’existe pas : on dit despite ou in spite of. Et « despite » ne peut pas être suivi directement d’une proposition ; il faut despite the fact that.
