Les modaux expriment une capacité, une permission, une obligation, un conseil ou une probabilité. Ils obéissent à trois règles fixes : jamais de -s à la 3e personne, toujours suivis de la base verbale sans to, et ni do ni does pour la négation ou la question.
- The manager can approve the request.Pas « cans » ni « can to approve »
- Employees must not share their passwords.Négation : must not, sans do
- Could you send me the invoice?Question : le modal passe devant le sujet
Le sens de chaque modal
| Modal | Sens | Exemple |
|---|---|---|
| can / can’t | Capacité, permission, possibilité | Customers can return items within 30 days. |
| could | Capacité passée, demande polie, possibilité | Could you call me back? The delay could cost us the contract. |
| may / might | Permission formelle, possibilité (might : plus faible) | You may leave early today. The flight might be delayed. |
| must | Obligation, déduction certaine | Visitors must sign in. She must be in a meeting. |
| have to | Obligation venant de l’extérieur | We have to submit the report by Friday. |
| should / ought to | Conseil, recommandation, attente | You should back up your files. The package should arrive today. |
| would | Conditionnel, politesse | Would you like a coffee? I would prefer the morning slot. |
| will / shall | Futur, offre | Shall I open the window? |
Must not ou don’t have to ?
C’est le piège de sens le plus fréquent. must not = interdiction ; don’t have to = absence d’obligation.
- You must not park in front of the entrance.C’est interdit
- You don’t have to bring a laptop; we will provide one.Ce n’est pas nécessaire
Modal + have + participe passé
Pour parler du passé, le modal est suivi de have + participe passé. C’est une structure fréquente dans les questions difficiles.
- should have + p.p. : reproche, regret. We should have ordered more paper (on aurait dû).
- must have + p.p. : déduction sur le passé. The email must have gone to spam.
- could / might have + p.p. : possibilité passée. The parcel might have been delivered to the wrong office.
Modal + passif
modal + be + participe passé : Forms must be signed by the manager. The meeting can be moved to Thursday. La partie 5 propose souvent « must sign / must be signed / must signing » : le sujet subit-il l’action ?
Piège : Jamais de to après un modal (sauf ought to, have to, be able to qui ne sont pas de vrais modaux) : « You should to call » est faux.
Piège : Pas deux modaux à la suite : « will can » est faux, on dit « will be able to ». Next year, we will be able to offer online training.
