Les pronoms relatifs

Who, which, that, whose, whom, where, when, what : choisir le bon relatif en un coup d’œil.

Un pronom relatif relie une proposition à un nom qu’elle précise : « the supplier who called », « the report that you sent ». Le bon choix dépend de trois questions : l’antécédent est-il une personne ou une chose ? Quelle fonction le relatif a-t-il (sujet, complément, possession) ? Y a-t-il une virgule ?

RelatifAntécédentFonctionExemple
whopersonnesujetThe employee who won the award joined in 2019.
whompersonnecomplément (soutenu)The candidate whom we interviewed accepted the offer.
whichchosesujet ou complémentThe printer, which is new, keeps jamming.
thatpersonne ou chosesujet ou complément, sans virguleThe report that you requested is attached.
whosepersonne ou chosepossession, suivi d’un nomApplicants whose files are complete will be contacted.
wherelieuproposition complèteThe room where we meet is being painted.
whenmomentproposition complèteFriday is the day when the new system goes live.

Avec ou sans virgule

  • Sans virgule, la relative est indispensable pour savoir de qui on parle : The supplier that offered the lowest price was chosen. That est possible.
  • Avec virgules, la relative ajoute une information : Mr. Ford, who joined last year, will lead the project. That est interdit après une virgule.
  • Which peut reprendre toute la phrase précédente : The supplier offered free delivery, which convinced us to sign.

Les cas qui piègent

  • The client we met yesterday called back.Relatif complément omis : whom / that sous-entendu
  • The office in which we work is on the 5th floor.Préposition + which (jamais + that)
  • What the client wants is a lower price.what = ce que, sans antécédent
  • Most of the employees, many of whom work remotely, approved the plan.quantifieur + of whom / of which

Where et when sont suivis d’une proposition complète (sujet + verbe + complément). Si la proposition après le blanc n’a pas de sujet, il faut un relatif sujet : which ou that.

Piège : « The office where is on the 5th floor » est faux : where demande un sujet après lui. On dit « The office which / that is on the 5th floor ».

Piège : whose ≠ who’s : whose est un relatif possessif suivi d’un nom ; who’s = who is.
