Formation
had + participe passé, à toutes les personnes : The train had left. Négation : had not (hadn’t) left. Question : Had the train left?
Quand l’employer
When we arrived, the presentation had already started.
Avec by the time + prétérit : By the time the manager called, the client had signed.
Pour rapporter des paroles au passé (discours indirect) : She said she had sent the file.
Dans le conditionnel du regret : If we had known, we would have changed the date.
When I got to the station, the train left.
When I got to the station, the train had left.
Indices fréquents : by the time, before, after, already, just, never… before, until.
Piège : Avec before ou after, l’ordre est déjà clair : le prétérit simple est souvent accepté (« After she finished, she left »). Au TOEIC, cherche l’autre indice : by the time et already appellent presque toujours le past perfect.
